Babydoll, a definition
The sexy sleepwear item Babydoll originates from the 1956 Film Baby Doll by Tennessee Williams and the film is credited with it's ensuing popularity. It is the name given to an item worn by Carroll Baker who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. The film was banned in many countries for its supposed sexual content.
Today when we refer to a Babydoll we are thinking of a short sexy sleepwear gown type garment, shorter than a Chemise and usually worn with matching panties or G-String.
